5 DIY Improvements to Make Your Home Feel More Polished

By Lauren Durmuş, REALTOR® · LIME Realty

You don't need a big remodel to make your home feel more finished. These five projects are manageable for most homeowners, they don't cost much, and they make a real difference whether you're staying put or getting ready to sell.

1. Swap out dated light fixtures

Lighting changes the whole feel of a room. Replacing a builder-basic fixture in the entry, dining room or over the kitchen island is one of the quickest upgrades there is. Add a dimmer for even more control. If you aren't comfortable with wiring, this is a small, affordable job for an electrician.

2. Add floating shelves

Floating shelves add storage and personality at the same time. Use shallow shelves in small spaces for photos and plants, and deeper ones in larger rooms for books and baskets. Anchor them into studs or use anchors rated for the weight.

3. Paint an accent wall, or the whole room

Paint is the best value in home improvement. An accent wall adds character in an afternoon. If you're preparing to sell, a fresh coat of a light, neutral color throughout helps buyers picture their own things in the space.

4. Install trim or molding

Crown molding, chair rail or simple picture-frame molding makes a room look custom and finished. Many trim products today are lightweight and paint-ready, which makes this a good weekend project.

5. Build a simple fire pit

Take the upgrade outside. A stone or block fire pit gives you a spot to gather in the evenings and adds appeal to the backyard. Before you build, check your city's fire rules and any HOA guidelines.

One tip

Finish one project before starting the next. A half-finished project feels worse than none at all, especially if buyers will be walking through.
